Health Tourism

Health Tourism has gained importance on a global scale in recent years. Basicly, it's defined as traveling to another country for treatment or health care.

Health Tourism is not a tourism alternative that takes place only in hospitals. Every way that offers health services for a healthy life, is considered a kind of health tourism.

    How Does Health Tourism Exist?

There are common reasons for going another country to benefit from Health Tourism. The lack of high-tech, lack of professional services, the higher costs of health services, the climate and geographical conditions, the desire to travel for reasons such as aging, and the ability to take a vacation with treatment are the main ones. Health Tourism has existed as a result of people who want to get helps and services in better conditions and at more affordable prices traveling for this purpose.

    Health Tourism in Turkey

Health Tourism in Turkey consists of 3 separate sections as "Medical tourism", "Third age tourism" and "Accessible tourism" (for disabled people), and "Thermal health tourism". Thermal tourism is under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Medical tourism is under the Ministry of Health, Third age tourism and Accesible tourism are under the Ministry of Family and Social Services.

There are approx 45 health institutions in Turkey that have accreditation from JCI (Joint Commission International). University hospitals and public hospitals, especially in big cities such as Bursa, Ankara and Istanbul, have very advanced equipment.High competence services are provided in fields such as aesthetic surgery, oncology, dentistry, MR, orthopedics, organ transplantation and ophthalmology across the country. The Health Tourism Department, which is affiliated to the Ministry of Health, works 24/7 and can communicate in languages such as German, Arabic and Russian in addition to English. This includes emergency calls.

All doctors are required to have a license for their compentencies.

Compensation is paid to the patient when a medical issue occurs due to the doctor's error or a complication.

All hospitals are checked by Ministry Of Health twice a year. All services about Health Tourism are under the control of the Ministry. All Turkish citizen have compulsory health insurance.

It's quite easy to understand that the country has a big potential considering rapidly growing economy, together with its natural resources.

Besides that it's also not surprising that Turkey is among the few popular locations in the world when it comes to Health Tourism as a result of the correct steps taken over the years.

Why Is Turkey Preferred By People In Health Tourism?

Turkey has very qualified and educated staff in the health sector. There is no problem in communication between doctors and health workers and people who speak a foreign language. A person who came for Health Tourism can easily find a solution to any issue that may be existed. Both doctors and nurses provide clear information to the person who is being treated and ensure that the morale is good.

The demand for Thermal tourism, which is a part of Health Tourism, is higher in Northern Europe and Scandinavian countries, where diseases such as Rheumatism are very common due to climate conditions.

Turkey has positive characteristics in good climate conditions, lower costs and transportation. These conditions make the country a greatly advantageous position in terms of Medical tourism, Third age tourism, and Sports tourism.

Istanbul, Ankara, Antalya, Izmir, Erzurum, and Van are among the cities most preferred by international patients.

These patients mostly prefer Gynecology, Ophthalmology, General Surgery, Internal diseases, Orthopedics, Oncology, Cardiology, Otorhinolaryngology, and Urology departments.

Besides that, due to the geographical familiarity, climatic conditions that are not found in the Middle East region, and considering the cultural similarity, Turkey is a good option for Health and Thermal tourism also in the Middle East countries.

Significant rises have been recorded in travels from these regions, due to recent visa exemptions, easiness provided at the borders, and other cultural relations with the Middle East countries.

Since the high health expenses in developed countries, the tendency to provide health services from lower-cost countries is increasing in order to decrease the treatment services of patients.

Some private insurance companies in Germany and the Netherlands have decided to cover the expenses of their patients to be sent to Turkey for thermal treatments. That's why thermal tourism achieves an important market share in Turkey.

Health Tourism may increase even more rapidly in the future if people's attention to their health increases, health services become competitive, and lower costs remain the main factor.

The demand for plastic surgery will continue to increase, experts say, so there will be a significant demand for overseas services, and heart surgery, which is the main element of Health Tourism, may be replaced with Plastic surgery.

Turkey is ready to serve all Middle East populations within the scope of health tourism, with the quality and economic health services it provides. It's clear that Turkey aims to be number one in the world in Health Tourism.
